José Luis González is an award-winning cartoonist, an accomplished playwright and screenwriter, and not-too-shabby filmmaker. He was born in a speeding ambulance on a cool January morning just outside of Monterrey, Mexico. He and his family moved to Del Rio, Texas- "The Wool and Mohair Capital of America"- a few years after. As a child, he taught himself how to draw by religiously studying the issues of MAD Magazine he kept hidden from his mother, who felt the women inside were muy chichonas (buxom). In school, classmates would pay him to draw lowriders, cartoon characters, or disliked teachers in compromising positions. In essence, this practice continues in his adult life.
A graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, his steady output since has included writing and co-producing the play “Luces de la Frontera,” producing the television programs “Sneak Peek 2000” for KVR-TV and “Liver City” for Austin Cable Access, making dozens of short films, and DJing at a pirate radio station. His art has been seen in galleries and publications throughout Texas, California, Colorado, Massachusetts, and New York, as well as on Current TV and the Texas State History Museum. Recently, his art was featured in the limited-edition LP “Trouble in Mind,” by renowned Texas musician Hayes Carll. Currently, he is completing work on his first feature-length screenplay/graphic novel, The History of Magic.
Most days, however, you'll find José Luis roaming the streets of San Francisco singing Gordon Lightfoot's "Sundown" to himself.
